The Ballroom Thieves (Session #2)

The Ballroom Thieves are a “rock band in a folk suit”. Drummer Devin Mauch and Vocalist/Guitarist Martin Earley began writing together in college; limited dorm room space and mandatory quiet hours forcing them to begin on acoustic instruments with stripped-down percussion. They’ve carried this organic style through, but added Cali Peters’ sorrowful cello and sweet vocal tone in late 2012. As a trio they incorporate electric bass and guitar to bolster a powerfully harmonious live show.

“A Wolf in the Doorway”, the band’s latest release, is their first recorded material with the addition of Peters. She reluctantly took lead vocals on the standout track, “Bury Me Smiling”, tying the record’s halves together with a sublime, relaxed transition. The Ballroom Thieves’ visual aesthetic is an important part of their image. Illustrated primarily by Martin’s sister, Annika, their merch site boasts shirts, posters and even playing cards designed after the record’s characters.

Watch them perform songs from the new record.
